Samsung has launched a monster budget phone in the market, the Samsung Galaxy M17 5G. This phone is the successor to the popular M series and brings some impressive features to the table. It seems like Samsung is offering a lot in this device, which you and many others might like.
The phone is set to go on sale on March 20. The actual price of this phone is ₹13,999. However, with card offers and launch discounts, you can get this phone for ₹11,999. In this review, we will unbox the device, test its performance, camera, and battery to see if it is truly a value-for-money device.
This is a collaboration video with Samsung, meaning they sent us this device for testing and to share our experience. But rest assured, whatever tests we conduct, you will see them transparently right here. Let's get started with the unboxing.
Unboxing
We received a special box from Samsung for this review. This is a special packaging sent for reviewers, which contains the device. The retail box that you will get in the market will look like a standard Samsung box, and inside it, you will find the phone itself.
Upon opening the box, we found a special message inside. The first look of the Samsung Galaxy M17 is quite appealing. Looking at the back, it has a premium vibe, and the front looks clean. For a budget segment phone, it definitely looks premium.
Specifications
Before diving deep, let's look at the key specifications. The display is a 6.7-inch HD+ LCD panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. The processor is the MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset. On the back, there is a 50MP + 2MP dual camera setup, and on the front, there is an 8MP selfie camera.
The phone runs on One UI 8 based on Android 16. The battery is a massive 6000mAh with 25W fast charging support. It also comes with IP54 certification for dust and water resistance.
Design and Build
In terms of design, the phone looks premium. It has a polycarbonate matte finish on the back with a polycarbonate frame. The thickness is 8.2mm, and it weighs around 198 grams. Despite the large battery, it feels quite light in the hand.
The phone will be available in two colors: Violet and Blue. The matte finish helps with fingerprints and gives a good grip. On the right side, we have the power button and volume rockers. The left side houses the hybrid SIM tray, which supports a memory card, which is a rare feature in this segment nowadays. On the bottom, we have a 3.5mm headphone jack, a Type-C port, a microphone, and a single speaker grille.
Display Quality
The front features a 6.7-inch HD+ LCD display with a waterdrop notch. The highlight is the 120Hz refresh rate, which makes the interface feel very smooth. We tested videos on YouTube, and the display performed well for this price point.
Since it is an LCD panel, the contrast isn't as deep as AMOLED, but the colors are decent. It supports 1440p playback on YouTube. It also has an 800 nits High Brightness Mode, which makes it readable outdoors. Overall, the smoothness of the 120Hz display is the USP here.
Performance and Gaming
Powering the device is the MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset. It is a 6nm chipset, which is quite good for a price point of around ₹12,000. We ran AnTuTu, and the score crossed 5 Lakhs. The CPU throttle test showed an 84% stability graph, meaning the chipset is well-optimized and stable.
For gaming, we tested BGMI. Surprisingly, the game ran on Extreme Settings (60fps). Initially, I expected it to be locked at HD or 40fps, but getting 60fps gameplay in this budget is impressive. There were very minor frame drops occasionally, but the overall experience was smooth. This phone is definitely capable of handling gaming well.
Camera
In terms of camera, we get a 50MP primary sensor and a 2MP depth sensor. We tested the camera in various conditions. In daylight, the photos came out crisp with good colors.
The Portrait mode is particularly impressive, offering good edge detection and decent background blur. Low-light performance is manageable with the dedicated Night Mode. The 8MP front camera takes decent selfies in daylight. Video recording maxes out at 1080p 30fps, which is standard for this segment.
Battery Life
This is a strong point of the M series. The phone packs a 6000mAh battery. For those who worry about battery drain, this phone will easily last more than a day. The One UI 8 optimization further enhances battery life.
It supports 25W fast charging. Since it is a large battery, it takes some time to charge fully, but the backup you get in return is worth it.
Software and Features
The phone runs on the latest One UI 8 based on Android 16. Samsung is offering 6 Years of OS Updates and Security Patches, which is unheard of in this price segment. No other brand is offering such long support at this price.
It also includes Samsung-exclusive features like Samsung Wallet, Samsung Knox, and Voice Focus. Connectivity-wise, it supports 12 5G bands, ensuring good network compatibility. It also features AI capabilities like Circle to Search and Live Translate.
Final Verdict
After spending time with the Samsung Galaxy M17 5G, I believe it offers a lot for the price of ₹11,999. The rear design looks premium, the display is smooth at 120Hz, the performance is capable of handling games at 60fps, and the battery life is excellent.
The biggest selling point is the 6-year update promise and Samsung's brand trust. If you are looking for a budget phone under ₹12,000, this is definitely a solid recommendation.
