Apple has officially announced the AirPods Max 2, the long-awaited successor to the original over-ear headphones launched in 2020. The new model brings significant upgrades, including the powerful H2 chip, which enables up to 1.5 times stronger Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and introduces new intelligent features like Adaptive Audio and Live Translation. Priced at $549, the headphones aim to compete with top-tier rivals like Sony and Bose.
The standout upgrade is the integration of the H2 chip, first seen in the AirPods Pro 2. Apple claims this chip provides a major boost to audio processing, enabling Active Noise Cancellation that is 1.5x more effective than the previous generation. This improvement promises to better block out environmental noise like airplane engines and city traffic, making for a more immersive listening experience.
In addition to stronger noise cancellation, the AirPods Max 2 introduce Adaptive Audio, a feature that dynamically blends Transparency mode and ANC based on the user's environment. This means the headphones can automatically adjust the level of noise cancellation depending on whether you are in a quiet cafe or a noisy subway, without requiring manual switching.
Another major addition is lossless audio support. When connected via the included USB-C cable, the headphones can play back 24-bit, 48kHz audio, catering to audiophiles and creators. The USB-C connection also enables ultra-low latency audio, making the AirPods Max 2 suitable for gaming and music production with tools like Logic Pro.
New Intelligent Features
Conversation Awareness: Automatically lowers the music volume and enhances surrounding voices when the user starts speaking, making conversations easier without removing the headphones.
Voice Isolation: Uses advanced microphone processing to filter out background noise and focus only on the user’s voice, ensuring crystal-clear call quality even in noisy environments.
Live Translation: Powered by Apple Intelligence, this feature enables real-time translation of spoken languages through a connected iPhone, helping users understand conversations across different languages instantly.
Design, Colors & Battery
Visually, the AirPods Max 2 retain the iconic mesh canopy and stainless steel frame but introduce five fresh colors: Midnight, Starlight, Orange, Purple, and Blue, replacing the previous Green and Sky Blue. The physical buttons have been updated, and the Digital Crown now functions as a camera remote for capturing photos and videos on iPhone.
Battery life remains solid at 20 hours of listening time with ANC enabled. The included Smart Case puts the headphones into an ultra-low power state to preserve charge. Weighing 386 grams, the design prioritizes comfort for extended use, though it remains one of the heavier options in its class.
